Ex-Prisoners! Medway's best kept secret return with their best album yet!

We've covered The Galileo 7 before - the False Memory Lane LP from 2014 and most recently the Live-O-Graphic Sessions LP from 2016. There was also a storming 7” on State Records - 'One Lie At A Time', limited to 500 copies. If you missed out on the 7” both its A and B-side are included on this latest long-player.

Quick history lesson – Allan Crockford is one of the architects and mainstays of the Medway sound. A founding member of The Prisoners, JTQ, The SolarFlares and The Prime Movers. (I won't go into too much detail, you have Google don't ya?!) Anyway, he's never one to rest on any laurels as latest band The Galileo 7's run of releases shows. It's shaping into a body of work that easily matches the output of his previous bands.

While False Memory Lane played to that line-up's psychedelic strengths, this latest effort sees them go for a more driving freakbeat sound, aided in no small measure by the addition of drummer Mole, a man who plays like he's aided by any number of exhilarants. Though it's more likely sheer talent and ability! He can be heard on the bands previous LP, the “nearly live” Live-O-Graphic Sessions. It's that strain of up-beat mod-rock stomp that's continued into the the band's latest effort Tear Your Minds Wide Open! which is available now on good old vinyl on Damaged Goods Records.

Fans of The Move, The Small Faces, The Who, Blossom Toes, The Creation, The Fleurs de Lys and the like will find much to love here. It's that mod-into-psych sound of 1966 but made now! Crunchy and crashing guitar chords, genuinely memorable melodic songwriting bolstered by organ chords and a truly special rhythm section. Crockford's knack of songwriting shows no sign of diminishing either, he still turns out cracking songs.

I'm a little late to the party with this one, the album came out late last year and quickly sold out its initial vinyl pressing. Thankfully there's a second pressing so you should be able to track down a copy. Go on, you won't be disappointed.

The Galileo 7 - The Live-O-Graphic Sessions

“Nearly live” LP from Medway's leading garage-psych outfit led by former Prisoners bassist Allan Crockford.

We've had the pleasure of featuring releases from The Galileo 7 in the past on Harmonic Distortion - Their FalseMemory Lane LP from 2014 and last year's 7” on State records 'One Lie At ATime'. Good to know then that the band are as busy as ever. To coincide with their recent French tour the band have released a blistering “nearly live” LP entitled The Live-O-Graphic Sessions. The 10 tracks give you an alternative “best of” and offer a taste of what the band sound like live. And that's pretty darn tasty!

Spontaneously recorded in the space of an hour with the help of Jon Barker (The Senior Service) at his ad-hoc studio set up amidst his lithographic printing press premises, the album is less soft-psych than their previous studio outings and back in touch with their garage band roots. Power-pop melodies and harmonies backed up with drumming set to the rarely heard Keith Moon energy level. The VU meters must have been working overtime, with the songs gaining extra brio and brashness as a result. Recommended.

The Galileo 7 – One Lie At A Time / The God Of Gaps (Ltd 7”)

Crockford & co follow up their recent False Memory Lane LP with 2 brand new Brit-psych stormers on traditional 7” vinyl!

Who would have thought that 2015 would be such a great time for vinyl record buyers? Despite the major labels getting their claws into Record Store Day, there's a multitude of grass roots labels releasing records that people actually want to own and play, as opposed to squirrelling them away or whacking on Ebay while still in their shrinkwrap.

Music lovers of all genres are pretty well served in today's genre-fractured climate, none more so than fans of '60s influenced guitar bands. Thanks to the good folks at State Records there's a new double A-sided 7” from The Galileo 7. Following on from last year's False Memory Lane album, the two brand new tracks showcase the band's knack for uptempo, melodic mod-rock. Hooky guitar lines bolstered by superb organ playing, all topped off by equally inventive vocal melodies and harmonies.

It's easy to see why Allan Crockford's previous band The Prisoners were such an influence on The Charlatans and The Stone Roses. Fans of those bands frustrated at the lack of new material should do themselves a favour and get behind a band that actually release records. This one is in ultra-punchy mono, limited to 500 copies, the first 250 of which come with a bonus 3-track CD.

The Galileo 7 - False Memory Lane (OUT NOW!)

Former Prisoners bassist Allan Crockford returns with third of album of softly psychedelic Britpop.

As bass player for The Prisoners, Allan Crockford's influence on British guitar music is assured. That the band never went on to mainstream success remains a mystery, but their legacy resonates still. And of course there are many ways to measure success, one being how much enthusiasm and desire one maintains to carry on making music. With this in mind you could say Allan Crockford and Prisoners' guitarist Graham Day are two of the most successful musicians around, though I doubt you'd recognize them on the street. And getting papped is probably not an issue for them. As Graham Day & The Forefathers they've just released a storming debut single (read about it here).

Crockford is a busy chap – along with bass-playing for the Forefathers, he's the main writer, vocalist and guitarist in his own band The Galileo 7, whose third long-player False Memory Lane has recently been released. Compared to The Forefathers material it's a record that's less about sonic attack, more about melody and harmony. It's altogether softer on the ear, subtler, though no less appealing. A satisfying blend of Medway mod, Britpop and home counties soft psychedelia, its key comparisons would be XTC, Martin Newell, and the much underrated Dodgy. With a catchy set of tunes, (driven by the sort of melodies Noel Gallagher would love to have written), plenty of bah-bah-bahs in the backing vocals, acoustic textures and vintage Mellotron upping the soft-psych quota, it's one of the summer's best under-the-radar releases.

It's worth noting the Medway towns are something of an anomaly, being out of step with the home counties general air of respectability and conformity. Rather than the Good Life's Margot and Jerry, its population is seemingly made up of vintage guitar wielding, retrogressive garage rockers intent on trying to recreate authentic '60s beat recordings. Sounds like heaven on earth doesn't it. Perhaps it's this desire to recreate that's behind the album's title. False Memory Lane would certainly be an apt street name for Rochester or Chatham.
